When there were news about Salman Khan anchoring a show for Sony Television, there was a sceptism that this show would be flop. I being a great fan of Salman khan and his movies had fear, Salman Khan may not succeed as a anchor because Salman Khan is known to be quite reserved and with little humour in real life. He is not kind of the person, who thinks on his feet. Neither he is Shahenshah of Bollywood Amitabh Bachan or Badshah of Bollywood Shahrukh Khan and over that, his relationship with media has always been poor. Salman Khan’s biggest challenge was to interact with normal middle class people in the show and create a rapport with them. The format of the show was more for masses and needed an anchor, who can think on his feet and have great sense of humour. Salman Khan has surprised everybody with his anchoring skills and show has become stupendous success.

Salman Khan is one of the first anchor, who is just being himself on the show. After watching the show, you come to show Salman Khan’s Popularity is rocket high. At forty two, he has still huge fan following on the other sex. The girls and women of all ages drool for him. Lot of credit goes to his father Salim Khan and mother Salma Khan to instill such good manners and habits in him. He respects the elders and can be a fun with youngers. The eunuch coming in his show is the most turning point in the show and it has happened first time in a reality show. The Eunuch told truth ‘Salman Khan Sahi Mayine Mein Superstar Hai aur Asli Mard Hai’. The format of the show is interesting and has lot of interesting questions. This show is for Aam Aadmi [Masses] and Salman Khan is the right choice for the Anchor because he is the most popular bollywood star among masses. This show has completely proved that. Salman also has great sense of humour and can think on his feet. Salman Khan was superstar with his movies but this show ‘Dus Ka Dum’ will take him to more popularity and rise his position to Megastardom. With his blogs also getting popular and where we come to real salman khan. We come to know, what he thinks? His thinking process and blogs reminds me of Bhagat Singh’s. ‘Dus Ka Dum’ is a super success and has become quite popular with it fans.

Salman Khan, the most controversial child of bollywood or the most ever handsome actor in India has seen success or failures of all levels. His movies have been big blockbusters and some have been also big flops but he has risen to stardom to superstardom to rockstar and could rise to megastardom with his telly show 'Dus ka Dum' in Sony Television. This telly show could be the turning point of his career, where he could win over so many fans and could earn many more fans. Salman Khan has got a chance to open up with his fans. Media has always made him the scapegoat but now Salman can clear his tarnished image. For me, Salman Khan is very good human being. For his NGO 'Being Human', Salman Khan has been taking lot of movies left and right and he is also taken this show, all for a good cause. He is a true ambassador for humanity and I believe, he deserves Padma Shri Award by Indian government for his Charity Work and this makes him a real hero of the society.

I saw the first episode of 'Dus ka Dum' and it impresses me a lot and was above my expectations. I always have my reservations on Salman Khan for anchoring a show because i feel, he is not that spontaneous but he has proved me wrong. You can feel the charisma of Salman Khan on the show. Intially he was nervous and It does happen with everybody when you do something new. But slowly, he was doing well but i also say, there is lot of scope for improvement as an anchor. This will also help him in his acting career. This telly show will help him making more fans then ever. Salman Khan was intelligent and cheeky enough not to answer personal questions related to his love life. He was very friendly in the show. But what i did not like was little bit of acting? I feel, anchors need to be more restrained and don't need to go over the top. Salman Khan is like a host and the participants are like guests. The duty of the host is to make guests comfortable. The format of the show is also interesting. The questions have certain touch of humour in it. You will come to know what 'Aam Aadmi' thinks. I truely believe that Salman Khan is a right anchor for the show. He is a masses actor. I will end with three cheers for the show 'Dus ka Show' and wish lot of success to superstar Salman Khan.

Each one of us must have heard close to a 100,000 songs in various languages, rendered by various artistes of all hues. Many great singers have entertained us with their thousands of songs over the last several decades and many more will continue to do so in the coming eras. We may not be familiar with singers of yore or the distant lands and how best they are comparable with the singers of the sub-continent. But even as we listen to Arabic songs or the Spanish ones, music lovers can differentiate between a good composition and a bad one. Or for that matter, the Gayaki of the singers is perceptible. Close to home, again we have had hundreds of exponents of all types of music – from Hindustani to Persian to Folk to Carnatic ultimately to the filmi HINDI-URDU mixture of Bollywood. Each one of them had their own distinctive style of singing. But all could not sing all the types of songs. Just imagine K L Saigal (god bless his soul) singing for e.g. TUM KAMSIN HO, NAADAN HO, NAZUK HO or a Mukesh rendering TUMSE KAHUN IK BAAT PARO SE HALKE HALKE. The head starts spinning isn’t it ?? Something jarringly is missing out there. One can imagine a Rafi singing DIL JALTA HAI TO JALNE DE but certainly not the first two examples.
For most people the world over a sexy thing easily is a woman. For most women, it could mean either of the two sexes. But when it boils down to mere GAYIKI or simply the voice, there will be no divided opinion as to who was the sexiest singer of all times. MOHAMMED RAFI indeed. Take the following songs for instance :
1. AAJA RE AA ZARA, LEHARA KE AA ZARA
2. AAJ KI RAAT YEH KAISI RAAT KE HUMKO NEEND NAHI AATI
3. PAAS BAITHO TABIYAT BEHEL JAYEGI, MOUT BHI AA GAYI HO TO TAL JAYEGI
4. MERI MUHABBAT PAAK MUHOBBAT, AUR JAHAN KI KHAK MUHOBBAT
5. NAZAR NA LAG JAYE KISI KI RAHON MEIN, CHHUPA KE RAKHDUN MEIN TUJHE NIGAHON MEIN
6. AISE TO NA DEKHO KE HUMKO NASHA HO JAAYE
7. TU MERE SAAMNE HAI, TERI ZULFEIN HAI KHULI

The above are only a few of hundreds of the very sexy songs rendered by Mohammed Rafi in his inimitable style.
Yeah Kishore Kumar too sang a few good songs in some sexy voice for e.g. ROOP TERA MASTANA, PYAR MERA DEEWANA but they are few and far between. Rafi on the other hand was at his sexiest best both in solo as well as duet songs. I remember when the song HAI RE HAI NEEND NAHI AYE from Humjoli was at the top, the girls of that era simply swooned at the voice of Rafi. While he sings Dil Ne Dil Se Kya Kaha, the emphasis that he lays on KYA KAHA was simply marvelous. Then again, in the song - Thahariye Hosh Mein Aa Lun, Toh Chale Jaiyega – the paragraph - KAB TALAK RAHIYEGA YUN NOOR KI CHAAHAT BANKAR, PAAS AANE BHI DO IKRARE MUHOBBAT BANKAR – was not just pure magic but also something that takes us into a dreamland of our own. Then there was YEH DIL DIWANA HAI, DIL TO DIWANA HAI, DIWANA DIL HAI YEH, DIL DIWANA, a duet with Lata Mangeshkar. Here again the subtle difference in the way every stanza is rendered, every word is pronounced, Rafi excelled to the hilt. His part of the song was very sexy when compared to Lata’s portion in the song.
Well. I hope I have not created yet another furore of Rafi versus the other singers. That was not my intention at all. Readers would therefore be advised to highlight similar songs by Rafi – solo or duets – which exhibit his sexy voice. We were lucky indeed to have been born in the same era as Mohd. Rafi and will cherish his songs until the end. Generations before him have missed out on the very best in music, but generations to come will continue to listen to songs of Mohd. Rafi again and again. For, the magic that he wove with his GAYIKI was mesmerizing indeed.
AB ZINDAGI BHAR KI KHUSHIYAN LEKAR, RAFIMURTY, KYA KIJIYEGA

HYDERABAD

The Rafi Foundation has been founded at Mumbai in mid-2007 and since then has grown into a phenomenal organization, like the mentor himself, and has today branches across various cities in India and is also spreading its wings worldwide.

The Foundation’s uppermost aim is to see that the Government of India confers posthumously the BHARAT RATNA on Mohammed Rafi Sahab, the greatest playback singer India has produced. Rafi Sahab ruled the scene of playback singing in the Indian Film industry for more than four decades, beginning from 1944 when his first song was recorded, to that fateful day of 31st July 1980 when he suddenly bid adieu to a nation lost for words and in utter disbelief.

The Foundation will also endeavour to establish a Museum at Mumbai dedicated to Rafi Sahab which will house the precious works of Rafi Sahab’s songs, his videos, his photographs, collection of great sayings by renowned film and political personalities, the media reportings, the lyrics of the songs, the various awards, prizes and medals that Rafi Sahab had won – in a nutshell the complete bibliography on the life and times of MOHAMMED RAFI SAHAB.

The Foundation will organize musical events in all the cities and encourage upcoming talent in the field of playback singing and music in general. It will award a musical prize to the winners in various competitions that will be organized, on the birth and death anniversaries of Rafi Sahab every year.

The Rafi Foundation publishes a tri-monthly magazine called SARGAM which is dedicated to the works of Rafi Sahab and many eminent writers contribute by way of articles, poetry, anecdotes etc. The inaugural issue hit the stands in October 2007 and the next issue is expected in March 2008.

Each day, a lot of activity is seen on www.mohdrafi.com, www.eternalrafi.com, www.rafi.co.in and in various other blogs of RAFIANS (as the Rafi-fans would like to call them).

It is the endeavour of the Rafi Foundation (Hyderabad Chapter) to enroll the rafi-bhakts or the RAFIANS who have a zest for doing something for Rafi Sahab. Its doors are open to all those RAFIANS who think that we must pay back Rafi Sahab in equal measure for all the pleasure that his songs have given us in the decades gone by and continue to do so for eternity.

Among the many boisterous fast songs sung by Mohd. Rafi Sahab, one song stands out as kingly as any can be. That song is the title song from the film RAAJKUMAR – Jaane Wale Zara Hoshiyar Yahan Ke Hum Hain Raajkumar. The song is picturised on the return of the prince to his kingdom from studies abroad and is so wonderfully picturised that one feels totally immersed in the sequence of events. Shammi Kapoor, the prince is atop a fully bedecked royal elephant, what with an entire band of trumpeteering band and scores of royal guards and aides in attendance. The setting is perfect for a royal entourage – the costumes, the glittering ornaments, the perfect lyrics and the fast paced music. The icing on the cake is once again the magical and shahanshahi rendering by Rafi Sahab. “Hoshiyaar, Hoshiyaar” echoes through the vast surroundings and through the entire route that the princely journey takes the viewers along. There is this ‘couldn’t care less’ attitude and a subtle message for the world that when a prince is taking a walk, the lesser beings beware. And lest anyone undermine the ‘king in the making’, he yells “Yahan Ke Hum Hain Raajkumar”. The subjects are reminded that the royalty affords him the centre-stage and that he has armies in front and at the back.

The first stanza proclaims that their ‘prince’ has toured the world and knows the “American” and “European” misdemeanors well enough. And dares anyone to come forward to test and be conquered. “Saari Duniya mein apni jaykaar” the prince emphatically declares. The second ‘antara’ gives the message that youthfulness and romanticism is with HIM alone and that HIS life story is fully colourful. The flow of masti and enjoyment is found in all the syllables and notations. The mood is of exuberance and celebration. One would notice that the frequent shouts of “OYE OYE” is there in all the three stanzas, but reaches a crescendo in the final stanza, where instead of these, the prince shouts it differently and in a reverberating fashion. The throwing of words in such ‘THHAT” and “DHOOM” cannot be found in any other song in such majestic manner. The prince has arrived and a future ‘KING’ is identified. LONG LIVE THE KING. LONG LIVE HIS MAJESTIC VOICE. That is Mohammed Rafi Sahab who cannot be replaced with anyone else when it comes to proclaiming one’s kingdom. The territory is well defined and he is the master of his subjects. And a king who is revered by his subjects, loved by the royalty and his royal army.

The song is therefore among the number one spot by all standards when it comes to boisterous and royal attitude. Take the other hits from the films of Shammi Kapoor – for instance the Junglee “Yahoo” (full throated yelling at the very best) and An Evening in Paris number – Aasman Se Aya Farishta (again the opening lines roaring from the sky above). They and many other songs are so highly placed songs that no singer would even dare to come near them, leave alone rendering them in such high voltage. But, this royale song from Rajkumar has the combination of all the high pitch and fast paced notes and the princely air around it that it cuts the winner’s tape easily, relegating many from such clan to be only ‘good competitors’.

I have often felt deeply distressed after Rafi Sahab’s departure in 1980 and could never relish the songs that came afterwards sans his voice. We have everything in life - a family, a source of income, children, friends - yet somewhere something was always missing. And that missing link is the unfathomable and the golden voice of Rafi Sahab. Often my thoughts brought me to a popular Urdu couplet : “TERE BAGAIR KISI CHEEZ KI KAMI TOH NAHIN, TERE BAGAIR TABIYAT UDAAS RAHTI HAI”. But then just as soon as these thoughts come and I listen to a few songs from Rafi Sahab’s collection that I have, the cheer returns back. I am sure most RAFIANS go through such phases each day in their lives. And between these thoughts, the princely feeling of being from such a royal descendancy creeps in yelling – YAHAN KE HUM HAI RAJKUMAR. Surely, we the RAFIANS have inherited the heritage of a kingdom, which is not the privilege of many more, and we are proud of the same.

EARLY LIFE:

Rajesh Khanna came from an affluent family. Khanna's father had misgivings about Rajesh's taking on a professional acting career. His initial foray into cinema with renowned film maker Chetan Anand was not a resounding success. Nonetheless, Rajesh persisted and exceeded all expectations. His previous theatrical background assisted him with the characterization of the personas of the cinema which he portrayed effortlessly and naturally. He is Hindi cinema's first officially acknowledged Superstar. In March of 1973 Rajesh Khanna married Dimple Kapadia, a Bollywood actress who had just made her film debut in Raj Kapoor's coveted blockbuster Bobby. At the time of Kapadia's film debut, she was sixteen years old; Khanna was thirty-one. They became the parents of Twinkle Khanna and Rinke Khanna, who would also become Bollywood actresses.

LATER LIFE:

Khanna and Dimple Kapadia separated in the early 1980s, but still they are fulfilling all the responsibilities of their social life especially in establishing the life of their daughters. Their elder daughter Twinkle who is an interior decorator is married to current star Akshay Kumar and younger daughter Rinkee is married to a businessman, after getting higher study from USA.Khanna was a Member of Parliament for the New Delhi constituency (1991-96).He is the life member of International Film And Television Research Centre and International Film And Television Club Of Asian Academy Of Film & Television. Recently he announced his appearance in a spate of forthcoming films for which he is hopeful of renewing previous success. He is also going to participate as Celebrity Judge in a reality show at Sony Channel called K for Kishore, based on the legendary singer late Kishore Kumar . He is also going to perform in a T.V. Serial Bhabhima with Leena Ganguly as Lead Pair of the serial.

BOLLYWOOD CAREER:

EARLY SUCCESS:

Rajesh Khanna joined the film industry in 1966 after winning an All India Talent Contest through a nation wide selection procedure by panel of judges like Late Bimal Roy, Guru Dutt, Chetan Anand, G.P. Sippy, Sri Sakti Samanta, Sri B. R. Chopra, etc., making his film debut was in Aakhri Khat which went unnoticed. He appeared in a few more films over the next two years which did not gain him any recognition. He shot to fame with the 1969 film Aradhana which was hugely successful at the box office. From then on he was an extremely popular actor in the early 1970s, appearing in many high impact romantic films and melodramas which were hugely successful at the box office. He was often paired with actresses Mumtaz or Sharmila Tagore. Some of his most successful films in this period included Anand (1970), Amar Prem (1971), Andaaz (1971), Daag (1973) and Namak Haraam (1973). During his heyday he would be mobbed during public appearances. Fans kissed his car, which would be covered with lipstick marks, and lined the road, cheering and chanting his name. Female fans sent him letters written in their own blood. From 1969 to 1973 he had 15 consecutive hit films, a journalist Devyani Chaubal dubbed him "phenomenon" when he was at his peak. Several of the popular songs sung by Kishore Kumar in the 1970s were picturized on Khanna and helped his films become historically successful.

LATER CAREER:
However the success perhaps caused him to be complacent, often turning up very late for shoots and throwing tantrums as well as having a whole entourage of sycophants accompany him for his shoots. This behaviour coupled with the changing trend from romantic movies to action oriented films in the late 1970s and 1980s caused the decline of Khanna's career in term of box office rating, but he continued to play lead roles in sober social household meaningful movies during the downtrodden trend of Hindi Cinema without any compromisation and gave the high profile films like Mehabooba, Anurodh, Karm, Palko ki Chaon Mein, Amar Deep, Thodi si Bewafai, Avataar, Souten, Amrit, Agar Tum Na Hote, Ghar Ka Chirag and many more during 1976 to 1991. He also performed central characters or guest roles in multi-starrer films as well such as Disco Dancer,Kudrat, Rajput, Dharam Aur Kanoon and Dharam Kanta, Ashanti etc.. He also took great risk and experimented with negative roles in Red Rose where he played a psycopath and in Dhanwaan, where he played an arrogant businessman . By the early 1990s he quit acting for many years and served as Hon'ble M.P. from prestigious seat of New Delhi Constituency from (1991-1996). During that period he appeared in Khudai (1994) and won Best Actor Award at Ujvegistan at Russian Film Festival. He made his acting comeback with three to four years gaps in Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999) and Kyaa Dil Ne Kahaa (2002) where he played elderly father roles. In 2006 he appeared in Jaana - Let's Fall in Love But in 2007 he has officially announced his second innings and has signed about ten new films simultaneously and some new TV serials. He is also going to participate as Celebrity Judge in a reality show at Sony Channel called K for Kishore, based on the legendary singer late Kishore Kumar Ganguly.

POLITICAL CAREER:

During 1991-1996, Rajesh Khanna was a Member of Parliament for the Congress Party, from the New Delhi constituency. He has since been a political activist for the Congress Party expressing noteworthy, objective and constructive patriotism for India.

TELEVISION CAREER:

In 2001-2002, Rajesh Khanna played major roles in two television serials: Aapne Parai (B4U & DD Metro) and Ittefaqu (Zee TV).He performed in a video album based on Tagore's immortal songs (Rabindra Sangeet) free of cost. Currently he is busy in processing his own music channel viz. R.K. Music Channel. He has recently endorsed a talent hunt programme namely "Star se Superstar tak" as the First Superstar of Indian Cinema, under the banner of Red Carpet Entertainment and donated a Gold Trophy of Rs.1 Crore with Ms. Priyanka Chopra.Recently he has signed a TV serial with Creative Eye Banner (Dhiraj Kumar). He is also participating as Celebrity Judge in a reality show at Sony Channel called K for Kishore, based on the legendary singer late Kishore Kumar Ganguly. He is also going to perform in a T.V.

The following is a report from the pages of www.mohdrafi.com and SARGAM magazine of the Rafi Foundation.

------SUBMITTED BY A S MURTY asmurty@rediffmail.com-------

Thousands of visitors from across the world are expected to descend on Birmingham’s Festival of Xtreme Building on Saturday 22 September as a tribute shrine to the late Bollywood legend Mohammed Rafi is unveiled in an attempt to make him a Saint.

The contemporary shrine, which will marry forms of sacred geometry with high-tech
materials and electronics, the CBSO, Bollywood singer Shin, the Dhol blasters, Gurcharan Mall and Bollywood dancers Hina & Co will all perform throughout the day, as part of a free event which is open to all.

Members of the public are being encouraged to bring offerings to be placed at the shrine. If enough offerings are placed, Rafi will attain the status of Sainthood.

Birmingham artist Tasawar Bashir designed the relic. He comments: “There is no doubt in my mind that Mr Rafi is already a Saint. However, life moves at a much faster pace in the 21st century and therefore I believe that achieving the status of Sainthood should reflect this societal shift.

“I asked myself how I could pay homage and honour Rafi, and was struck by the simple solution to make a shrine; a capsule in the middle of a bustling city which compresses time and space and expresses a one-to-one transmission between Mr Rafi’s voice and the listener. It is my intention that the shrine will transcend time and space.”

Traditionally a piece of the Saint’s body or a personal item must be placed within a shrine; in this case it will be a voice. Mohammed Rafi’s music will play continuously inside the space.

The shrine has been built from transparent materials to emphasise its accessibility, and to encourage people who may not be familiar with Islamic art, or indeed Mr Rafi, to explore the space. Tasawar continues: “The shrine will be affected by the environment, weather, and light depending on the time of day, meaning that every visit will be unique.”

Mohammed Rafi (1924 – 1980) is regarded as the greatest ever Hindi male playback
singer in Indian cinema. He provided the vocals for Bollywood actors to mime to, rising from humble beginnings to achieve unprecedented success. In a career that spanned over 40 years, Rafi sang over 26,000 songs in the national languages of India, and achieved success across many genres of Asian music.

His songs are associated with the golden age of Bollywood, and the genuine affection and love from millions of fans is thought to be as strong today as in 1980 when millions of people took to the streets for his funeral.

Dave Pollard, Curator of the Festival of Xtreme Building, comments: “Mohammed Rafi had near universal appeal and his songs covered both the sacred and the secular. We hope that the shrine will create a link between the city and communities which may not normally visit the town centre, and urge the public to assist Tasawar in his attempt to turn this respected man into the peoples’ Saint.”

The shrine is a ‘Project 500’ commission, a challenge set by the Festival of Xtreme Building asking artists and architects to work within a community to build a structure or installation with a budget of only £500. The shrine has been constructed with the help from community residents and the support of Travel West Midlands, SAMPAD and Marketing Birmingham.

The Festival of Xtreme Building aims to shine an international spotlight on the £6bn regeneration of Eastside, using a stream of internationally renowned architects, professional building developers and designers to engage and support local residents during the evolution of their new urban environment.

With entry to the festival completely free, the extreme buildings and works of art will make for an entertaining, not to mention educational, day out for families and schoolchildren. And visitors to the site will be given the opportunity to explore the buildings; a vast contrast to the usual encounters of such projects through DIY or home magazines.

For more information and to find out how you can get involved, visit www.festivalxtremebuilding.org.uk

The FXB is supported by Birmingham City Council, Arts Council, Arts and Business, European Regional Development Fund and Advantage West Midlands.
